Christ Church is located in Phoenix, Arizona with congregations in Mesa, Gilbert, Central Phoenix and Peoria, reaching over 4,500 people weekly. At Christ Church, they fly one flag—Christ crucified. He’s the one deserving worship. He’s the one proclaimed. He’s the one worthy of following. Since launching in 2012 with a core group, Christ Church has grown significantly in Phoenix in weekly attendance across multiple congregations in the city. They offer vibrant worship services where people experience the manifest presence of God. They have engaging programs for children, youth, young adults and adults, and a variety of opportunities to get involved through groups and studies. 

About the Adult Discipleship Pastor

The Adult Discipleship Pastor for the Central Phoenix Congregation is a unique role designed for a leader who loves people, develops leaders, and is energized by building healthy ministry systems. This pastor will oversee Groups, Studies, Care Groups, and Premarital Ministry, ensuring these discipleship rhythms are growing in both quality and reach. The role combines pastoral shepherding and care, leader development, teaching/content creation, and ministry management, with an emphasis on strengthening existing systems rather than reinventing them. The ideal candidate will help members take meaningful next steps in following Jesus while serving as a trusted pastoral partner to the broader team and developing toward potential Elder leadership.

The Adult Discipleship Pastor's responsibilities include:

Adult Discipleship Leadership & Execution

• Provide leadership and oversight for all adult discipleship rhythms at the Central Phoenix campus, including Community Groups, Studies, Care Groups, and Premarital Ministry.
• Ensure adult discipleship ministries are growing, not simply existing, with a focus on both ministry health and measurable engagement.
• Recruit, train, develop, and support staff and non-staff leaders across all adult discipleship functions.
• Ensure the effective execution of adult discipleship ministries according to the standards, philosophy, policies, and procedures of Christ Church.
• Create clarity around ministry expectations, goals, systems, and outcomes while continually looking for thoughtful, incremental ways to improve ministry effectiveness.
• Help members and attendees take meaningful next steps in discipleship and engage in the rhythms of life at Christ Church.
• Oversee the baptism process, including baptism preparation, interviews, and coordination.
• Plan and execute Women’s Ministry gatherings, including management of associated ministry budgets.

Teaching & Spiritual Formation

• Ensure accurate, compelling, and accessible biblical teaching throughout adult discipleship ministries.
• Teach in weekend services as needed.
• Lead studies and other adult discipleship environments as needed.
• Identify, recruit, develop, and support effective teachers throughout the adult discipleship ministry.
• Pursue continued development as a preacher and teacher while helping others grow in their ability to communicate biblical truth.
• Ensure teaching and discipleship environments remain aligned with the theology, philosophy, and culture of Christ Church.

Shepherding & Care

• Function as a relationally accessible pastor who helps ensure members are known, cared for, and connected to the life of the church.
• Engage regularly with members to assess spiritual needs and identify discipleship goals.
• Provide and coordinate pastoral care for individuals and families, including marriage counseling, benevolence, and other spiritual needs.
• Proactively identify and engage members who may be becoming disconnected from the life of the church.
• Assist the pastoral team in creating a positive and meaningful care experience for church members.
• Come alongside members and attendees to help them grow in Christ-likeness and pursue meaningful next steps in their faith.

Operations & Ministry Management

• Properly manage ministry assets, resources, and budgets while following established Christ Church policies and procedures.
• Build and maintain healthy systems that allow adult discipleship ministries to operate with clarity, consistency, and excellence.
• Monitor the effectiveness and health of adult discipleship ministries and make appropriate adjustments.
• Develop ministry leaders who can effectively carry responsibility and multiply discipleship throughout the congregation.
• Serve as a trusted pastoral partner to the Executive Director, Central Phoenix, and broader pastoral team.
• Demonstrate a willingness to manage and strengthen an established ministry rather than feeling the need to continually reinvent it.

The following describes many of the characteristics of the ideal candidate for the Adult Discipleship Pastor:

Education and Experience

• At least 5 years of pastoral ministry experience, demonstrating spiritual maturity and the ability to effectively shepherd people and engage with God's Word.
• An undergraduate degree is required; a seminary degree is strongly desired, or the candidate must be willing to pursue one.
• Demonstrated experience leading people, developing leaders, and managing ministry systems.
• Experience overseeing Groups, Studies, discipleship ministries, or other congregational ministry functions is highly beneficial.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Exceptional organizer and executor who can take established ministry systems and make them increasingly healthy, effective, and scalable.
• Strong teacher and communicator who can communicate biblical truth accurately, compellingly, and in a way that is accessible and applicable.
• Leader developer who is skilled at identifying, recruiting, training, coaching, and supporting both staff and volunteer leaders.
• High Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and strong relational instincts.
• Detail-oriented with a high standard of excellence and the ability to manage multiple ministry functions simultaneously.
• Able to assess ministry health, identify opportunities for improvement, and execute thoughtful, incremental change.
• Able to carry the vision, theology, philosophy, and culture of Christ Church into the local adult discipleship ministry.

• Must be a married male.

• Has the character, maturity, and leadership capacity to potentially be presented to the church for consideration as a future Elder.
