Meet First Presbyterian Church

If you are searching for a church home that blends deep historical roots with a warm, small-town heart, First Presbyterian Church of Laurens is well worth a visit. Located right on West Main Street within the town’s historic district, the church welcomes you with its striking, late-nineteenth-century Gothic Revival architecture. Step inside, and you will find a congregation that values a traditional, reverent approach to worship, anchored by a dedicated music ministry that includes both a choir and a bell ensemble. It’s the kind of place where history feels alive, providing a grounded, stable environment to grow in your faith alongside neighbors who truly know each other.

Beyond the beautiful sanctuary, First Presbyterian is deeply committed to being a supportive community for families and individuals alike. The church fosters connection through robust ministries for all stages of life, including men's and women's groups, adult Sunday School, and a highly regarded on-site nursery school program for infants and toddlers. Whether you are joining them for worship, staying for fellowship over coffee and donuts in the Hunter Fellowship Hall, or participating in one of their community canned food drives, you will find a multi-generational church family dedicated to serving Laurens and helping you feel genuinely at home.

About the Senior Pastor

The Senior Pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Laurens, SC, will serve as the primary spiritual leader, tasked with planning and leading worship services while delivering inspiring, concise (approximately 15 minutes), and theologically sound sermons. This role requires a compassionate and empathetic pastor dedicated to providing pastoral care for members in need, officiating weddings and funerals, and equipping elders and staff for visitation ministries. Additionally, the Senior Pastor will develop and lead adult education initiatives and mentor teachers and youth program leaders to foster a church-wide culture of discipleship and spiritual growth.

As the Head of Staff, the Senior Pastor will be a highly organized administrator responsible for supervising the church staff, which includes a music director, administrative personnel, a custodian, and an associate pastor for youth and families that the church plans to call in the near future. This leadership role involves overseeing church communications, managing stewardship and budget matters, and actively encouraging congregational involvement in local missions while representing the church in community activities and ecumenical partnerships. The candidate must have the strong presence necessary to manage staff dynamics and ensure effective communication among the staff, the Session, and the congregation.

A critical component of this position is leading the church's robust, ongoing strategic planning efforts. The Senior Pastor must be an energized, charismatic, and determined leader who is excited to execute a vision aimed at reversing the trend of decline often seen in smaller Presbyterian churches. This strategic execution will involve leaning heavily into growing the youth and young adult programs, which may entail establishing a pre-K school or constructing family life facilities, as well as making modest updates to worship, music, and public communications to ensure the church's long-term vibrancy.

What it's like to live in Laurens, SC

Living in Laurens, South Carolina, offers a quintessentially slow-paced, small-town Southern lifestyle rooted in deep local history. With a cozy population of roughly 9,300 residents, the city centers around its historic, tree-lined downtown square, which serves as a community hub for local boutiques, seasonal farmers' markets, and festivals like the annual Squealin’ on the Square BBQ event. The community is tight-knit and multi-generational, meaning neighbors quickly become familiar faces, and local life naturally revolves around high school sports, church families, and active civic groups.

One of the most practical and appealing aspects of making a home in Laurens is its exceptional affordability. The overall cost of living sits about 9% below the national average, but the real draw is the real estate market—housing costs are roughly 27% lower than national benchmarks. Whether you are looking for a historic Victorian home to renovate near the city center, a classic brick ranch in an established neighborhood, or a modern subdivision with a bit of land, homeownership remains highly attainable here. This makes the town an attractive oasis for retirees wanting their savings to stretch further, as well as young families looking to plant roots without a crushing mortgage.

While Laurens feels delightfully insulated from the frantic pace of major metropolitan areas, it is far from isolated. Its position in the Upstate region means residents enjoy a short, 22-minute average daily commute, with major economic and cultural powerhouses like Greenville and Spartanburg just a 40-minute drive away up Interstate 385. This gives locals the best of both worlds: they can spend their weekdays enjoying peaceful, traffic-free living near local recreation spots like Lake Greenwood, while easily accessing the high-end dining, major healthcare systems, and job markets of the larger Upstate cities on the weekend.
