What it’s like to live in Lake Geneva, WI
Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, is a charming resort town known for its scenic lake, historic mansions, and year-round recreational activities. Located in southeastern Wisconsin, it has long been a getaway for visitors from Chicago and Milwaukee. Originally inhabited by the Potawatomi, who called the lake “Kish-Way-Kee-Tow” (“clear water”), it was renamed “Geneva Lake” in 1835. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, wealthy families built summer estates here, earning the town the nickname “the Newport of the West.”
Visitors can enjoy the 21-mile Geneva Lake Shore Path, boat tours, water sports, hiking, golfing, and winter skiing. Historic sites include the Geneva Lake Museum, Black Point Estate, and Yerkes Observatory. Families can visit Timber Ridge Waterpark, Safari Lake Geneva, or enjoy seasonal festivals like Winterfest. Downtown offers shops, galleries, restaurants, and a lively atmosphere for dining and nightlife.
